New Presidents … and a Sea Change

Comings and Goings …

James Mabry, vice president of academic affairs for Mesa Community College in Arizona, was named the next president of Middlesex Community College in Massachusetts. He will succeed Carole Cowan, who was Middlesex president from 1990 to 2014 and chaired NEBHE from 2002 to 2004.

Joyce B. Hedlund was named interim president of the University of Maine at Machias, effective Jan. 5, serving until a permanent president is identified. Hedlund spent 20 years as a president in the Maine Community College System, leading the Eastern Maine Community College in Bangor and the Washington County Community College.

Burlington College tapped former Lyndon State College President Carol Moore to serve as its next interim president. The college has been in the news for its financially struggles. Moore has co-authored recent NEJHE articles on  the curriculum and graduation standards.

Anton F. Post, senior scientist at the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, Mass., was appointed director of the University of Rhode Island’s Coastal Resource Center (CRC), succeeding Stephen Olsen, the founding director who led CRC for 40 years until his retirement in 2012.
