New Leaders Named at Johnson State, MCLA, Mass State Ed Board, Boston Schools

Comings and Goings …

The Vermont State Colleges Board of Trustees named Elaine Collins to be the next president of Johnson State College, succeeding President Barbara Murphy when she retires June 30. Collins is currently dean and chief operating officer of the College of Education at Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Mich., and served as interim vice president of academic affairs at Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA).

MCLA, meanwhile, named Gregory Summers to be the college’s 12th president, succeeding Mary Grant, who became chancellor of the University of North Carolina at Asheville.

The Boston School Committee selected Tommy Chang, an official at the Intensive Support and Innovation Center of the Los Angeles Unified School District, to be Boston’s new school superintendent.

Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker appointed Paul Sagan, former president and CEO of Akamai Technologies, to chair the state Board of Elementary and Secondary Education. Sagan is an executive in residence at General Catalyst Partners, where Baker previously worked, and like Baker, Sagan is as an advocate for charter schools.
