Santiago Named Mass Higher Ed Commish; Cummings to Lead USM, as Previous Candidate Decides to Stay On in NJ

Comings and Goings …

The Massachusetts Board of Higher Education voted unanimously to appoint Carlos Santiago to be the new commissioner of higher education. Santiago was senior deputy commissioner for academic affairs witt the state’s Department of Higher Education and had served as chancellor of the University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee.

The University of Maine System (UMS) announced that current University of Maine at Augusta Interim President Glenn Cummings will be the new president of the University of Southern Maine, effective July 1. The announcement comes on the same day that UMS announced that Stockton University President Harvey Kesselman, who had accepted an appointment to become president of the University of Southern Maine, instead agreed to a request by the Stockton Board of Trustees to remain as acting president of the New Jersey university, providing continuity and valuable leadership while Stockton resolves challenges around plans to develop a campus at the former Showboat Casino Hotel in Atlantic City.
