University of Maine at Machias (UMM) Interim President Joyce Hedlund resigned effective Friday, Dec. 11., to have heart bypass surgery. Hedlund had been hired out of retirement in early 2015 after leading Maine’s Washington County Community College and Eastern Maine Community College. UMM Provost Stuart Swain will serve as acting president in Machias.

James F. Conneely, former president of Notre Dame of Maryland University, was named the new president of the University of Maine at Augusta, which operates campuses in Augusta, Bangor and the University College Centers in eight rural or underserved communities.

The Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts named former Franklin Pierce University President James “Jaimie” Birge to be the 12th president of the public college in North Adams, Mass.

University of Massachusetts Lowell Chancellor Divina Grossman announced she would leave her post on Dec. 24, reportedly under pressure from Marty Meehan, president of the five-campus UMass system, former congressman and former UMass Lowell chancellor.

Connecticut Gov. Dannel P. Malloy was tapped to become chair of the Democratic Governors Association.

Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) appointed Plymouth State University Assistant Vice President of Enrollment Management and Director of Admissions Andrew B. Palumbo to be dean of admissions and financial aid at WPI.
