From Malawi Leader to Guvs to Actor Redford, More Commencement Speakers at New England Colleges

Naturalist and free-speech advocate Terry Tempest Williams will address the Unity College graduation on Saturday, May 9 at 1 p.m. in the Unity gym.

Joyce Banda, president of the Republic of Malawi from 2012 to 2014, will deliver the Wheelock College undergraduate commencement address on Friday, May 15 at 10 a.m. Temple Israel.

MSNBC host Lawrence O’Donnell will address Wheelock’s graduate commencement at 3 p.m. at the Wheelock Family Theatre.

Civil rights pioneer Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.) will deliver Elms College’s 84th commencement address on Saturday, May 16 at 10 a.m. at the MassMutual Center in Springfield, Mass.

Philadelphia Daily News columnist Helen Ubiñas will keynote the 53rd commencement at Northern Essex Community college, her alma mater, on Saturday, May 16 at 11 a.m.

Lisa G. Szarkowski, vice president of humanitarian emergencies and executive communication for the U.S. Fund for UNICEF, will keynote Wheaton College’s 180th commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 16.

Juliet V. García—the first Hispanic woman to lead a U.S. college, whose decades of leadership at the University of Texas at Brownsville expanded educational opportunities for Hispanic and first-generation students—will deliver the commencement address at Smith College’s graduation ceremony on Sunday, May 17 at 10 a.m.

Crisis management advisor Judy Smith, the inspiration for the TV series Scandal, will deliver the commencement address at Lasell College on Sunday, May 17 at 11 a.m. on Taylor Field at Lasell’s Newton, Mass. campus.

Matt Goldman, co-founder of Blue Man Group and of the Blue School in Manhattan, will keynote Clark University’s 111th commencement on Sunday, May 17 at noon on the Jefferson Academic Center Green.

Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker will keynote the commencement  ceremonies at Suffolk University’s College of Arts & Sciences on Sunday, May 17.

David Kelley, founder and chair of the innovative global design firm IDEO and founder of Stanford University’s Hasso Plattner Institute of Design, will keynote Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering’s commencement on Sunday, May 17.

Bryan A. Stevenson, founder and executive director of the Equal Justice Initiative in Montgomery, Ala., will keynote the College of the Holy Cross commencement  on Friday, May 22 at 10:30 a.m. on the campus.

Two-time Academy Award winner Robert Redford will keynote Colby College’s 194th commencement on the lawn of Miller Library on Sunday May 24 at 10 a.m.

Novelist, poet and essayist Julia Alvarez will deliver the 2015 commencement address at Middlebury College, her alma mater, on Sunday, May 24 at 10 a.m. on the main quadrangle behind Voter Hall on College Street.

Former Massachusetts Gov. Deval L. Patrick will keynote the afternoon exercises at the 364th commencement of Harvard’s University, his alma mater, on Thursday, May 28.

U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren will keynote Berkshire Community College’s 55th commencement on Friday, May 29 at Tanglewood in Lenox, Mass.

Filmmaker and author John Waters will keynote Rhode Island School of Design’s commencement on Saturday, May 30 at 10:30 a.m. at the Rhode Island Convention Center in downtown Providence.
