Former U.S. Ed Chief Spellings to Leave Helm of UNC System Mid-Contract

Former U.S. Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings will step down as president of the 17-campus University of North Carolina System on March 1, 2019, only three years into her five-year contract. Spellings wrote for NEJHE (then called Connection) about the national Commission on the Future of Higher Education, which she led as education secretary.

The University System of New Hampshire Board of Trustees named former Antioch University New England CEO and provost of and Keene State College Interim President Melinda Treadwell to be permanent president of Keene State, her alma mater.

Mount Wachusett Community College named Paul Hernandez, former chief diversity officer at Lansing Community College in Michigan, to be Mount Wachusett’s first-ever vice president of academic & student affairs.

Sterling College named Philip Ackerman-Leist, a professor of sustainable agriculture & food systems at Green Mountain College and author, to be dean of Sterling’s continuing education program, the School of the New American Farmstead.

Mohsen Mostafavi, dean of the Harvard Graduate School of Design since January 2008, announced he will step down from the position at the end of the 2018-19 academic year and return to his position on the faculty after taking a sabbatical.
