Former NEBHE Chair Cowan to Leave Middlesex CC; UMaine Names First Woman Prez; RI Snags Commish from Louisiana

Comings and Goings …

Middlesex Community College President Carole Cowan said she will retire during the upcoming academic year. Cowan joined the college in 1976 as a professor in the business department and, in 1990, was chosen to become MCC’s third president. Cowan chaired NEBHE from 2002 to 2004.

University of Maine System Chancellor James H. Page selected Susan J. Hunter to be the next president of the University of Maine, the first woman to serve the role. A cell biologist, Hunter began her career at UMaine in 1987 and has since served in various academic and administrative capacities including associate provost and dean for undergraduate education, assistant director in the College of Natural Sciences, Forestry and Agriculture and chair of the Department of Biological Sciences.

The Rhode Island Board of Education named former Louisiana Commissioner of Higher Education Jim Purcell to lead the state’s college system as the new commissioner of higher education.

Springfield College appointed Tracey Matthews to be dean of its School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation.
