Fed Chair Bernanke, Arianna Huffington, Dr. Paul Farmer Among Closers Announced for NE Commencement Season

Kenneth I. Chenault, chair and CEO of American Express Company, will keynote the undergraduate commencement at the University of Massachusetts Amherst on Friday, May 10, at 5 p.m. in McGuirk Alumni Stadium.

Anna Eleanor Roosevelt, president and CEO of Goodwill Industries of Northern New England, will keynote the commencement ceremony at Saint Joseph’s College, in Maine on Saturday, May 11, at 10 a.m. on the college’s Standish campus.

Video artist, conceptualist, photographer and painter William Wegman will keynote the University of Maine at Farmington’s commencement ceremonies on Saturday, May 18, at 10:30 a.m. on the campus.

Ben Bernanke, chair of the Federal Reserve, will address graduates at the 44th commencement ceremony of Bard College at Simon’s Rock on Saturday, May 18, at 11 a.m. on the college’s Blodgett Lawn.

Paul Baumann, editor of Commonweal magazine, will keynote Sacred Heart University’s graduate commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 18, at 1:30 p.m. E. Patricia Llodra, first selectman of Newtown, Conn., will keynote the university’s 47th annual undergraduate commencement on Sunday, May 19, at 11 a.m.

Claude M. Steele, noted researcher on how stereotypes influence group performance from academics to athletics, will deliver Tufts University’s commencement address on Sunday, May 19, at 9 a.m. on The Green on Tufts’ Medford/Somerville campus.

The Rev. Michael J. Garanzini, S.J., president of Loyola University Chicago and a national figure in Jesuit higher education, will address undergraduates at Fairfield University’s 63rd commencement on Sunday, May 19, at 9:30 a.m. on the campus’s Bellarmine Lawn. Dr. Patrick W. Kelley, a director with the U.S. National Academies’ Institute of Medicine, will speak at the graduate ceremony at 3 p.m.

Bridget M. McCormack, who was elected to the Michigan Supreme Court last year and is former co-director of the Michigan Innocence Clinic, will keynote Trinity College’s 187th commencement on Sunday, May 19, at 11 a.m. in the campus Quadrangle.

Lucie Salhany, who was appointed the first woman chair of a major broadcasting network in 1993, will deliver the commencement address for Lasell College on Sunday, May 19, at 11 a.m. on Taylor Field.

Arianna Huffington, president and editor-in-chief of The Huffington Post will keynote Smith College’s 135th commencement ceremony on Sunday, May 19, at 10 a.m. in the campus Quadrangle.

Raytheon Chair and CEO William H. Swanson will keynote Bunker Hill Community College’s 39th commencement exercises on June 1, at 11 a.m.

Dr. Paul Farmer, a physician and co-founder of Partners In Health, will keynote College of the Atlantic’s commencement ceremony on June 8, at 2 p.m. Partners In Health is an international nonprofit organization providing direct health care services, research and advocacy on behalf of people who are sick and living in poverty.
