New England higher education professionals gathered last month at NEBHE’s Next Generation Transfer event at the College of the Holy Cross and called for increased open discussion of college transfer, with the aim of greater sharing of data, information and policy.
Four in 10 students in New England transferred at least once in their college career, according to 2015 data from the National Student Clearinghouse. Transfer students are more important than ever to the New England economy, as the region faces projections of slow population growth coupled with increasing demands from employers for more educated workers.
This past year, NEBHE began a grant-funded initiative called Tuition Break Transfer. This program aims at facilitating transfer from community colleges to out-of-state bachelor’s degree programs offered under Tuition Break. In the coming years, NEBHE hopes to assist a greater number of transfer students access affordable education throughout New England. NEBHE will also support New England institutions by helping promote seamless transfer within New England.
The Next Generation Transfer convening engaged speakers from across the country to expand on timely transfer topics, as well as facilitated panel discussions on the following:
- Current transfer data and trends
- Transfer outcomes and suggestions for improvement
- Interstate collaboration and block transfer
- Reverse transfer
- Transfer landscape in New England and potential regional collaboration
