Rhode Island Education Commissioner Deborah A. Gist was chosen to be the new school superintendent in her native Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Rhode Island Gov. Gina M. Raimondo announced she would nominate Citizens Financial Group Executive Vice President Barbara Cottam to chair the state Board of Education. She also planned to nominate First Bristol Corporation CEO and former University of Massachusetts Trustee Jim Karam, and King’s Cathedral founder Rev. Dr. Jeffery Williams to the board’s Post-Secondary Council, and Rhode Island Latino Arts Executive Director Marta V. Martínez, and Betsy Shimberg, program director for K-12 education at Brown University’s Howard R. Swearer Center for Public Service, to the K-12 Council.
