New Hampshire College President Thomas Horgan Appointed to NEBHE Board

Horgan is president and CEO of the New Hampshire College & University Council (NHCUC), a statewide not-for-profit consortium of public and private colleges and universities.

”Tom Horgan is a recognized leader in forging collaboration among higher education institutions, public and private, small and large,” said NEBHE President and CEO Evan S. Dobelle. “We look forward to his active participation on this six-state board.”

Horgan joined the NHCUC as executive director in 1993. Previously he served as president of the Nebraska Independent College Foundation, and as a state senator in Nebraska’s non-partisan unicameral Legislature.

NEBHE is a congressionally authorized, six-state agency whose mission is to promote greater educational opportunities and services for residents of New England. NEBHE programs are principally focused on the relationship between New England higher education and regional economic development. The agency is now in its 50th year.

NEBHE’s Regional Student Program (RSP) provides New England residents with a major tuition break at out-of-state public colleges and universities in the six-state New England region if they pursue certain academic programs not offered by their home institutions. Last academic year alone, more than 8,400 New England residents participated in the program and saved nearly $44 million in tuition.

NEBHE publishes Connection: The Journal of the New England Board of Higher Education, which is read by opinion leaders and practitioners in education, government, business and the nonprofit sector. NEBHE’s Excellence through Diversity Program is designed to increase access to higher education for underrepresented minority students preparing for careers in science, engineering and technology.

NEBHE’s newest initiative, College Ready New England, will unite leaders of education, business and government from all six New England states to develop strategies to increase the economic competitiveness and well being of the region and its residents.

Horgan joins a distinguished group of delegates from academia, private industry and government in representing the six New England states on the 48-member NEBHE board.

Other New Hampshire delegates to NEBHE include: state Sen. Lou D’Allesandro; Kathryn G. Dodge, executive director of the New Hampshire Postsecondary Education Commission; Andrew R. Peterson of Peterborough; former New Hampshire Gov. Walter Peterson; Stephen J. Reno, Chancellor of the University System of New Hampshire; state Rep. Stella Scamman; and William J. Simonton, commissioner of the New Hampshire Community Technical Colleges.
