In mid-September, Ruth J. Simmons announced she will step down as president of Brown University at the end of this academic year. She became the first black president of an Ivy League institution when Brown appointed her in 2001, after serving as president of Smith College since 1995.
Theodora J. Kalikow, president of the University of Maine at Farmington since 1994, announced she will retire June 30.
