Former NEBHE Chair Cain to Lead EMILY’s List; Faustian Bargain at Harvard

Former NEBHE Chair Emily Cain was named executive director of EMILY’s List, which helps elect female Democratic candidates who support abortion rights. She succeeds Jess O’Connell, who is now CEO of the Democratic National Committee. Cain was elected to the Maine House in 2004 at age 24. In 2010, she became House minority leader. In 2012, she was elected to the Maine state Senate. Cain twice ran unsuccessfully against U.S. Rep. Bruce Poliquin in Maine’s 2nd District before becoming chief strategy officer at the Portland, Maine-based digital history company HistoryIT.

Harvard University President Drew Gilpin Faust will step down next year after 11 years leading the 380-year-old institution as its first woman president. As the Boston Globe noted in its headline: “The biggest job in education is open. Who’ll fill it?”

Former Brown University and Smith College President Ruth Simmons was named interim president of Prairie View A&M University in Texas.

The Dartmouth-Hitchcock health system named Dr. Joanne Mather Conroy, an anesthesiologist and CEO of Lahey Hospital and Medical Center in Burlington, Mass., to replace outgoing CEO James Weinstein as head of New Hampshire’s largest private employer and only academic medical center.
